(Ten) Years Gone By.

This day: the last day of the last year of this decade.
:
Me: wondering what needs to be said about it.

I’ve been thumbing through memories. Here are some important ones.

On this day, ten years ago I wore a jean jumper from Maurices to my first stake dance in Kuna, Idaho. I danced with Joey George (Jared was present, too). And just before midnight, we counted down the seconds, then welcomed in the new millennia.

Ten years ago.

My parents had lost their minds and moved us far and away to the countryside. I’ve often wondered if they had decided to move elsewhere, if they had given in to my begging, where would I find myself now?

Quite possibly not here. I’ve thought it through. I’ve thought it. And I believe we’re very much led. In retrospect, it becomes almost blatant.

There is a certain Hand in all things.

There was a Hand in the choice I made five summers ago when I decided on a new home for myself (though, then, it felt more whimsical than anything).

One choice, and I moved without knowing anyone at all.

I moved here.

A few months later, Jared arrived.

A few months after, we loved each other.

One decision (or a few). And it affected eternity.

Two years ago, we sat across from each other on the bed in the basement of CKeller’s. It was Christmas morning. Earlier, we exchanged presents. And then, when we were alone, we exchanged hopes for the new year. The biggest, most heartfelt hope on the list: a child of our own.

Within one month, there was a beating heart.

A few months after, a baby. A little darling. All from a single choice.

Throughout the days and months since then, we’ve stretched ourselves. We’ve learned and grown. We’ve decided so many, many things. We felt deeper, felt more.

This decade has been good to us. We find ourselves happy, peaceful, at home.

At the end of each day, I like to tell myself that what I have here is a glistening piece of heaven on earth. Truly.

--------

Tonight, we’ll most likely toast to each other some sparkling sparklie in our flannel Christmas pajamas we received last week. We’ve picked up Costco goodie goods and after Morgan’s soundly sleeping, we’ll be watching Jack Bauer kick some serious ‘bad-man’ arse (you know what I’m saying?) on our little laptop because we’re minus a (working) television at this point. Sound charming? I think so. And I wouldn't trade it.

Happy New Year, my dears! I’ll be seeing you!

Our Little Tree

Our little tree has been up for almost two weeks now. November 30th was the day, I believe. By the time we picked it out and loaded it in the truck, Morgan's nose looked like Rudolph's. Once we got home, it took Jared almost an hour to get our Christmas bins out of storage in the rafters above our garage. Bless his soul. I stood beside him holding our rickety old ladder while shivering (our garage is freezing) and squealing with excitement. Opening Christmas bins is seriously almost as exciting for me as Christmas day. Almost.

We spent the rest of the evening watching Christmas movies and decorating and drinking marshmallow hot chocolate in our Christmas mugs we received at our Christmas-themed wedding four years ago.

Here are some pictures from the evening we picked out our tree.

The Ones We Built.

{Me, Dad, Missie and Buffie - 1986-ish}

It's a sweet day when a message in my inbox reads something like this:

Hollie,

.....I love so much the memories of little kids running around getting excited about the decorations we were pulling out of storage, the excitement in their eyes as I hung lights on the house, the wrapping of gifts knowing they were so excited to know what was inside, the building of ginger bread houses, the watching of Christmas specials on TV, and many more. Oh how I love the memories of my children around my home. Just thinking of these memories is bringing tears to my eyes....I think of you and Lissie and how each of you are starting your families and the traditions you will build. It brings a warm feeling because I love the ones we built...I look forward to seeing you in a week and the time we will spend together.

Love you lots!!!!

Dad

Aren't we blessed to know that life with our families can be one eternal round?

For this, I am so thankful.

Oh my! I just got an email from my dad with a link to the Idaho Statemen. Turns out, the best decorated house this year is that of 2137 North Sapphire Place --- the place I called home when I was a little girl!

Every now and then, when we're in Meridian, we make a special trip down Chateau Drive just to pass by. My mom's lace curtains are still hanging in the front bay windows. Every time we pass the house, I have an overwhelming urge to run up to the door and tell the person living inside that I lived there first - that I grew up there.

I have a feeling we'll be driving by this house again in the near, near future. And I will have to resist knocking on their door to tell them that I spent ten Christmases there and that my dad's christmas lights looked way better.

You betcha, dad. It's true.

Check out the article here.
