November seventh: creativity

{My mom and Morg sewing curtains for his big-boy room, January 2011}

I'd like to abandon post in our bedroom for a few minutes, to rest my weary you-know-what (and don't be thinking anything naughty!). I'm talking about painting! I think I was drunk about 3 1/2 years ago when I chose the paint colors in there and I've hated them ever since. I hate to paint walls but I love the outcome. I love that with some elbow grease, a room can be absolutely transformed in a few hours.

Today I've been thinking about my creative mom and I'm grateful to have been raised in a home where my own creativity was nourished and encouraged. And I'm thankful I'm married to someone who understands I need free reign to do whatever my heart says it needs to do in terms of all things 'home'. Say for example....drilling a piece of sheet metal to our kitchen wall, or painting our front door a deep sea blue.

I think it's thrilling to take creative chances. It sort of feeds my soul and makes me happy. And if 'happy' for me means dragging home junk, re-purposing, rearranging, painting, hammering, and drilling, so be it. Every now and then, something turns out 'off-the-wall' wrong, but usually things end up being so loveable and just right for us.
